Today was the big day! I’ve been working all week, preparing to appear before the Duke’s Secretary and make my application for a plot of land. The requirements of land ownership are: securing the good favor of at least three citizens, demonstrating a commitment to the community, and payment the 90 pound fee.
It took some time and sacrifice, but I’d finally met the requirements. I owe a big thanks to folks like Drake_roanoake, Allorardagon, and Ariani for the advice and guidance they’ve given me.
After registering, I left the Duke’s office to see my new plot. I had to hurry to make it to the mines in time for work. (Yes, I’m still working the mines – it’s good money for the unskilled, such as myself.) It took a bit of searching, but I found my plot. It’s an acre-or-so of vegetable patches winding around a small ditch (I’m told it’s a stream.) It may not be the nicest plot in the land, but it’s mine, and I love it.
I had to run, but, I made it to the gold mines in time. The labor was probably just as hard as previous, but it sure seemed lighter. Even the constant hunger in my belly went almost unnoticed as I thought about being a land owner. I finished work and ran straight back to my plot.
I hadn’t noticed before but there were several improvement to the field arrangements I’ll want to make eventually. I also realized I didn’t even go inside the small farm house on the property. It’s strange to think I’ll be living there starting tomorrow.
Since it was getting late, I considered spending the there, but decided against it since I’d still have to return to the shed tomorrow anyway. Oh well. By waiting, sleeping here tomorrow will be my official first day as a landowner by all accounts.
